I went out Friday and Saturday night with a guy named Juan Pablo, who is an English teacher at the school I’m teaching at. He lived in the UK for 8 years, so he speaks English very well, but we still have serious communication problems; partly because he’s a crazy artist that plays the guitar, writes plays, and idolizes Edgar Allan Poe, and partly because he learned English in Britain. A typical conversation for us goes like this:
JP: Do you know where we are?
Me: No.
JP: Do I?
Me: I hope so.
JP:
Me: Oh good.
JP: (long pause) But where are we going?
Me: Your friend’s house?
JP: Oh… (long pause) Of course. I have a refuse lorry, would you like to buy it?
Me: What?
Honestly he’s like a real life version of Waiting for Godot. Crazy, but a good guy I think.
