Barichara and Hormigas Culonas

Juan Pablo and I also made a quick trip over to Barichara, a tiny town with some nice Colonial architecture, and some pretty sweet views.
Barichara is also known for its Hormigas Culonas, or Fried Ants. The woman who sold us our bag of ants told us the following:
  • The ants are much more common in March and April, so they are expensive right now (we paid 3,000 pesos, or about $1.50 USD for a small bag)
  • She buys the ants alive from country peasants who catch them
  • Her job is to clean off all the dirt and pull off their legs, antennas, and mandibles. This leaves just the edible parts, the heads and bodies, for her to fry. She assured us this process is a lot of work.

This is a video of me trying them for the first time….

Yea right. Considering I've seen you eat dog food for free, it's not worth the postage.
