More American Culture

I asked my students what things they have trouble with and they said idioms and verbs with prepositions. So I got a big list of phrasal verbs such as:

  • turn on the light
  • make out what the writing says
  • check out the book from the library

Etc. etc. Then I taught them all the “alternative meanings” of all those verbs. It was a fun class period.

I’m also getting fun questions about American culture.

Girl: Teacher, what’s a hollerback girl?

…..

Boy: Teacher, what’s a gangsta?

Me: A criminal. But sometimes in songs it also just means that something is cool.

Boy: What does paradise mean?

Me: It’s like heaven. Living in a gangsta’s paradise is like living in heaven for criminals. Good song huh?

Boy: Yes.

There's a great story about me and me mom in high school.

Mom: What spirit day do you have on Friday?
Me: Gangster day.
Mom: Oh cool! Like '20s...Al Capone?
Me: No, Mom....like...ghetto
Mom. Oh. [very matter of factly] You mean gangsta.
